A recent study within the American Journal of Dentistry looked at how a variety of baked nuts may improve the health of your teeth & smile. The study measured the acidity within the mouth of a variety of patients. After instructing the participants to rinse with sucrose, the participants were told to chew on a variety of baked nuts/seeds including but not limited to pistachios, walnuts, sunflower seeds . . . etc. The study determined the following:

Baked nuts or seeds did not enhance plaque acidogenicity when consumed without additional sugar and may help prevent caries when consumed after the intake of meals or sugar-containing snacks or beverages

These findings give an indication regarding how a change in our diet can effect the smile of our patients. Hopefully more studies will indicate how we can improve dental care in the future.
